Principal Welcome Back

Hello Monticello Families,

I hope all of you have had some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather with your kids this summer. Although school does not officially start until August 29th, our staff is already planning for the 2023-24 school year. Over the next two weeks, our teachers will be setting up their rooms and receiving training on strategies to support the needs of our students. As part of the training, our teachers will learn how to identify the strengths and the areas of concern for each individual student. They will work collaboratively to provide social, emotional and academic supports to ensure that all students are getting what they need to be successful.

Last year, our students and staff worked extremely hard to recover from the loss of learning that took place during the pandemic. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am proud to announce that all of our grade levels showed growth on the state and district assessments in both ELA and Math. Our 8th grade math students outperformed the state on the smarter balanced assessment and our 8th grade science students showed a 10% improvement from the previous year.

As we embark on a new year and new challenges, we realize that it takes a collaborative effort between the school, the home and the community to help students be successful. With your support, we promise to provide ALL students with the necessary resources to help them reach their full learning potential. We ask that you support your student by ensuring they attend school daily, they complete their assigned work and you monitor their progress throughout the year. Our teachers welcome two-way communication to help meet the needs of your students.

Monticello Mission Statement

We believe we make a difference in the lives of our students by providing a safe and supportive environment where ALL students receive a high-quality, comprehensive education that inspires them to become life-long learners and equips them with the skills and knowledge to succeed in high school and beyond.

Transitioning to a new school can be overwhelming. To alleviate the stress, we will hold our 6th Grade Orientation on Monday, August 28th from 12:00-2:15pm (more information will be sent out by email). All 6th grade students will enter the gym from the back parking lot. Students will receive their schedules, tour the building, and attend classes for a short period of time. This event is for students only.  7th & 8th grade students will be able to pick up their class schedules from 2:15-3:00pm in the gym on August 28th. During this time, students will also have an opportunity to tour the school and meet their teachers. If you have any questions, please email me at smerzoian@longview.k12.wa.us

We encourage everyone to be actively involved in the educational process. Students have an opportunity to participate in several clubs and extra-curricular activities, while parents are encouraged to volunteer in the school or join the PTO. The PTO Meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30pm. We have several committees that need parent and student input. If you would like additional information, please check out our school website at https://monticello.longviewschools.com/ or follow us on Facebook @monticellomiddleschool.
