Principal Announcement - 8/16/2021
Hello Monticello Students and Families,
I hope that you are enjoying your summer break. It is hard to believe that the 2021-22 school year is just around the corner. I am excited to get back to in-person learning 5 days a week and to see all of you back in the building. The last couple of years have been challenging for all of us, but I believe the pandemic has taught us how to persevere and overcome obstacles. At Monticello, we call this grit. Grit has always been a characteristic that sets our school apart from others.
As we embark on a new year and new challenges, we still have one goal in mind. We want to provide a safe and supportive environment where ALL students receive a high-quality comprehensive education. To achieve this, we have assembled a highly qualified staff that knows how to meet the complex needs of our students. We realize that this requires a collaborative effort between the school, home and community. With your support, we promise to provide ALL students with the necessary resources to help them reach their full learning potential. This will include additional learning opportunities due to loss of learning that may have occurred over the last two years.
Monticello Mission Statement
We believe we make a difference in the lives of our students by providing a safe and supportive environment where ALL students receive a high-quality, comprehensive education that inspires them to become life-long learners and equips them with the skills and knowledge to succeed in high school and beyond.
We understand that middle school can cause anxiety for some students. To alleviate the stress, we will hold our 6th Grade Orientation on Monday, August 30 at 1:00pm (more information will be sent out soon by email). All 6th grade students will enter the gym from the back parking lot. Students will receive their schedules, tour the building, and attend classes for a short period of time. This event is for students only. A parent orientation will take place on August 25 (more information will be sent out soon by email). 7th grade students can pick up their class schedules from 2:00-2:30pm in the gym on August 30, while 8th grade students can pick their schedules up in the gym from 2:30-3:00pm. If you have any questions, please email me at smerzoian@longview.k12.wa.us
We encourage everyone to be actively involved in the educational process. Students have an opportunity to participate in several clubs and extra-curricular activities, while parents are encouraged to volunteer in the school or join the PTO. We have several committees that need parent and student input. They meet once a month on Tuesdays from 2:40-3:40pm. If you would like additional information, please check out our school website at https://monticello.longviewschools.com/ or follow us on facebook @monticellomiddleschool.

Family Access/Skyward:
Want to know your student’s absences and grades at all times? Create a Family Access account on the district website. You will receive a login and password to help monitor lunch attendance & grades. This is the easiest way to keep track of all student information. This can be done using your smartphone or home computer.
Family Resource Center:
We are fortunate to house the district’s Family Resource Center. The resource center gives parents a place to get help and connect with food, housing, mental health or other services. If you have questions, please contact them at 360-575-7250.
Student Handbook (Expectations):
Handbooks will be handed out and reviewed the first week of school. You can find a copy of the handbook on our website as well. One of the question that comes up the most is cell phone use. Phones are to be put away during school hours.
Absent?
Remember when your child is absent to please call the office to report it within 24 hours. You will need to make sure the absence is excused so you don’t fall into the Truancy process. If you are planning to pick up your student during the school day, make sure you give the office one hour’s notice. We need to be able to have time to deliver a note to the classroom without interrupting the instruction of other students. If your student is experiencing any Flu or COVID type symptoms, please keep your student home and notify our attendance secretary akennedy@longview.k12.wa.us
